Teaching kids to have good oral health care is a difficult thing on its own, but the challenging part is having them do dental care when they start getting lazy. Your job as a parent is to encourage your kids to brush their teeth and floss even when they are too lazy to do so. But if you don’t want to play a police officer, here are some preventative things that you can do to ensure that your kids’ teeth stay healthy.

Create Healthy Habits

Where a lot of people go wrong is allowing their kids not to brush and floor their teeth regularly until the age of 4 or 5. This will make it harder for them to make the habit later on in life and they will just be too lazy to do it. The sooner you have them brush and floss their teeth on their own with your supervision will make it easier for them not to be lazy about it. The key to this is to be there with them and make it a fun habit. Turn it into a bonding time by singing fun songs, watching videos or reading stories. You can even make it a fun family activity by doing it all together, they love mimicking their siblings and parents. But if you are still working on creating that habit, the best thing that you can do to prevent their teeth from getting damaged is to have them eat and drink less sugar. Having too many sugary foods without brushing teeth regularly will cause tooth decay in the long run. So, the best preventative thing for their teeth is to skip on fizzy drinks, sweets and opt for healthier snacks and drinks.

Allow Your Children to Choose

One of the best things that you can do if your kids are too lazy to take care of their teeth is to make it into something fun. On top of that make sure that you are letting them have a choice in the whole routine. Have them choose their own toothbrush, toothpaste as well as mouthwash. Doing so will help motivate them to use it as they will choose something that they love. There are a lot of dental products that have their favourite characters on them which is a great motivation. Paying just a couple of dollars more for those products is way better than having to take them to the dentist for fillings. It’s the simple things.

It Is Important to Listen to Your Children

If you are letting them, make their own decisions and you are trusting them to brush their teeth on their own, make sure that you are checking on their teeth from time to time. Every once in a while, make a fun game that will allow you to see their teeth and ensure that they are keeping up with brushing. Another thing that is important is to listen to any complaints that they might make on their teeth. If they are complaining that something feels weird or they are chewing odd, make sure that you are taking them to the dentist.

Schedule Routine Dentist Visits

One of the best things that you can do when you have a lazy brusher is ensure that you are taking them to get preventive dental care on a regular basis. Once you are at the doctor’s office make sure that you ask your dentist to do some preventative care on the teeth such as sealants. The dentist will also be able to tell them what will happen if they don’t keep brushing their teeth and how it can affect their future teeth and that will often frighten the laziness out of them.

Have Them Use Fluoride Toothpaste

If the dentist’s lecture didn’t work, the best thing that you can do is ensure that they are using fluoride toothpaste. Not a lot of people realize that fluoride is actually a crucial part of your kid not developing cavities. It is a safe mineral that will prevent tooth decay and keep the teeth strong. It is a must as most counties have low levels of fluoride in the water.

Motivate Them With The Classic Tooth Fairy Story

If you have a child that is young enough to still believe that there is a tooth fairy, why not try that route. Motivate them to brush their teeth by telling them that the tooth fairy doesn’t collect teeth that are not clean and just like Santa, she always knows if they were good about brushing their teeth.
