If the Ukrainian President is not allowed to speak at the awards, American actor Sean Penn says he will ‘smelt’ his trophies. He wants Zelenskyy to be invited to the ceremony. Read more..
Sean Penn has called the Hollywood stars to boycott this year’s event unless they allow president Zelenskyy to speak at the awards. The actor was recently in Ukraine and he was filming a documentary there on the Russian invasion but as the bombarding continued and people lost their lives, Penn was emotionally shattered and he decided to stop the filming and had to leave the country. He left by crossing the border in Poland.
Here’s what is said as he spoke to the CNN:
Actress Amy Schumer is hosting the award ceremony and she said, “I actually pitched, I wanted to find a way to have Zelenskyy satellite in or make a tape or something just because there are so many eyes on the Oscars. I am not afraid to go there, but it’s not me producing the Oscars.”
Penn said that it was disappointing to know this and is asking every other actor to take a stand and boycott the awards. He had won the trophy for his film “Milk” in 2009 and he says he will smelt it if the President of Ukraine is not invited to the ceremony.
His words:
“If it turns out to be what is happening, I would encourage everyone involved, though it may be their moment, and I understand that, to celebrate their films, it is so much more importantly their moment to shine, and to protest and to boycott that Academy Awards.
I myself, if it comes back to it, when I return, I will smelt mine in public. I pray that’s not what happened. I pray there have not been arrogant people who consider themselves representatives of the greater good who have decided not to check in with leadership in Ukraine. So I’m going to hope that’s not what happened, and I hope everyone walks out if it is.”
