1. Spituk to Stok

Start with this relatively simple (4 days) tour that covers several scenic areas in Leh, if you’re just starting with trekking. Begin by driving from Leh to the about 7 kilometers away Spituk Village. It could take 4-5 hours to travel across the dry and barren land to the greener zones of Zinghen valley, from Spituk up to Zinchen (usually the first half). Here the river Rumbak flows into the Indus River and is the ideal place for hiking, enjoying the countryside, and maybe even swimming in the river. On the following day, you will be able to discover several mountain flora and fauna through the Hemis National Park. A three to four hours walk, mostly uphill, brings you to the lovely town of Rumbak. Day 3 will be a little harder on a steep path close to Stok La and down to Mankarmo (5-6 hours of trekking). The last day will carry you to the village of Stok a 3 to 4-hour descent through small valleys with beautiful rock patterns.

Following the Markha River, the next day you’ll go to Markha Valley. Day 5, as you travel to Thachungtse, will see you cross the river many times. The next day is a 4-5 hour uphill walk to Niamling – the top camp of the walk. You can get a splendid view of the Zanskar range from here. Kang Yatse is one of the most beautiful mountainous places in Ladakh, and it takes 12-13 days to complete an adventurous, challenging hike. The Markha Valley Trek stretches basically to Niamling, where you can go to Kang Yatse base camp. You’ll go to the High Camp of Kang Yatse the next day. Although the gap between the two campsites is smaller, it is mostly a very difficult uphill path. The next day, at around 2 am, you will begin your ascent to the Kang Yatse summit. A bird view of Tibet and the Zanskar River can be obtained from the pinnacle. Next day you will return to Niamling and the pass of Kongmaru La with its steep gorges and peaks like Shang Gorge’s surreal rock configurations, and finally camping in Shang Sumdo. You will go to Martselang on the last day, eventually return to Leh, where you will join the monasteries of Hemis, Shey and Thiksey.

5. Chadar Trek

Walk a frozen river, have you ever?? The Chadar River Trek is the most interesting tour in Leh. The Zanskar River. The road is open to incredible visitors for a couple of months every year when the river freezes. This is definitely a threat to your physical and mental health and will last 6-20 days depending on your level of expertise. The frozen river resembles a snow blanket, which is why it’s called ‘chadar.’ The trail begins at Leh and finishes at a distance of 64km from Leh to Chilling. Walking on the snow and ice may be very tricky at the outset since you can find numerous surfaces – new, powdery snow or old and hard ice. Even if much of the trek is on the frozen riverbed, you will be climbing the ice rocks at times. Besides the rising peaks, you can also see frozen waterfalls, monasteries like Lingshed Gompa and Karsha Gompa (Zanskar’s largest), and Zangla fortress. The temperature in the daytime normally goes from -5 to -10 C and it can drop to -25 C during the night. Therefore, it is necessary to wear enough warm jackets and clothes (wind and rain proof).
