AOL has ceased operations with Microsoft’s Outlook service. Why? According to AOL spokesperson Kari Heistad: “Overtime, while we have had positive results with Outlook over the past several months, we have decided that it is time to focus our efforts on new technology that will allow us to better serve our customers in the digital age.
“But, when I asked her about it, she didn’t truly say that AOL no longer has any plans to offer its email service or adding Windows Live to the Outlook ] interface. So, I go on to ask: “So, when will we be looking at the added performance of the Windows Live layer?”
Kari Heistad: “I can’t provide specifics on any of the enhancements that are coming to Outlook. It would be too premature to discuss such matters at this time. We want to give all our customers the update they’ve been asking for while remaining as sensitive as possible to the privacy and security of our customers’ information.
In addition, while we do have some exciting new technology on the way, we cannot comment on whether or not we will, in the future, be able to provide the updates to our AOL email service that our customers have requested.” They do have some new technology in the form of a new browser, which is supposed to provide faster Internet response times and better privacy protection.
AOL Doesn’t Work with Outlook Express?
AOL email doesn’t support Outlook. According to the AOL email support tech, “Exchange ActiveSync isn’t supported on Outlook. “We believe that Outlook and other email services are becoming more difficult to use with more data being put online. “The eligibility to sync your AOL account and calendars will come later,” he added.
- If your mailbox is stored on Microsoft Exchange Server (MES), you will have no problems with AOL email not working when you try to log in using Outlook Express.
- MES is the default in Microsoft Outlook and is part of the group email client, which allows you to access your messages and contacts from any computer that has an internet connection.
- You will need to download and install the “Email Account Center” software for your email client and then set up your MES to use your primary email address.
- Once you do that, any email you send or receive from anyone other than your primary email address will show up in your inbox.
Microsoft’s FAQ for users of Microsoft Outlook
“If you try to open an Outlook message that is from an offline recipient, the Outlook window may show a message that says, ‘Cannot connect to the email server.’ If you click the arrow next to that message, it will say, ‘Click here to get connected to the email server.’ When you click the server icon, the Outlook window will show a message saying, ‘Connecting to the email server.’
When you click the next button, you will be taken back to the message box where you can click on the option you want to use to connect to the server.” AOL’s FAQ for users of Microsoft Outlook states, “If you attempt to open an email that is from an offline sender, the outlook browser might display a message that says, ‘Cannot connect to the server.’ If you click the ‘Network’ icon, you will be taken back to the message box where you can click on the ‘Create Direct Connection’ button to create a secure, anonymous connection to the server.”
If you try to view email on your primary email account while on AOL, it will redirect you to read/write Microsoft Outlook. If you have this problem, you probably have a secondary email account such as Hotmail or Gmail. In fact, this might be a sign that your AOL email account has been hacked into at some point.
Many people who have had their AOL email account hacked to find out after they have deleted all of their emails, and there is usually some sort of error that lets them know. So, if you’re receiving the ‘Cannot connect to the server’ message when you try to view Outlook email on AOL, and you already have a Gmail, Hotmail, or Microsoft Outlook email account, then your email provider might have blocked your email account from being able to be accessed on AOL.
This is just one example of why AOL will not let you access your Outlook email on their server. You can still use other email providers like Yahoo and Google if you’d rather use their email programs. But, with AOL, you’re basically dealing with a brick-and-mortar email account, and AOL does not offer the same level of support that it offers its other competitors. AOL does not make it easy for you to find a computer to use to run Outlook.
“Why won’t AOL give me email access if I use my email provider?”
AOL provides email access through the use of a third-party company called the Electronic Mail Service (EMails). The Electronic Mail Service is usually provided by larger email providers such as Yahoo! or Hotmail.
These companies allow you to access your email wherever you happen to be using the Internet, even when you’re on the other side of the world. The difference is that you are given a special identification number through which you can log into your AOL email account from any computer with an Internet connection so that you can use your AOL email account without having to worry about missing email mail.
