The Impacts of Coronavirus Across the Globe

Rosy Aggarwal

Let’s talk about the Impacts of Coronavirus. Over the centuries, the world has witnessed and survived many deadly and lethal pandemics. Every time nature throws a new challenge in front of mankind and the great minds at work have time and again proven their resilience even in the toughest of the situations.

This too shall pass and once again man will emerge out victorious.

As per World Health Organisation, the mortality rate in the case of coronavirus is approximately 6.78 percent as on 21 April 2020 and is mounting exponentially due to the absence of any specific medication to treat it or even prevent it from occurring in the very beginning.

Only certain precautions are to be observed like washing hands frequently, wearing masks and usage of sanitizers, keeping a distance from people already infected, and avoiding touching face.

Accidently, starting from a part of China- Wuhan, the patients over distances and borders have multiplied from hundreds to thousands to millions. Currently, approximately 2.4 million people have already been affected by it.

The effect is not only constrained to demographic or economic aspects of a nation but has highly impacted the environmental, cultural, and political arenas as well.

Political Impact of Coronavirus

Disease had never been biased; it has equally affected both developed and developing nations. To date, the world has witnessed the worst-case scenarios in the developed countries only, with the USA being the most affected one. Graphically, Italy is no far behind followed by Spain, France, Germany, UK, and China.

The pandemic has not just created a health emergency but also a global recession like situation which reflects the incompetence of the world leaders. The elevation of this deadly graph is diminishing the international credibility of the nations.

With the restrictions on the exports of essentials, political relations are taking a new turn. The postponement of elections in almost all the continents of the globe has brought democracy to a standstill.

Economic Impact

The pandemic is not just disrupting the political panorama of the world but has also engulfed all the three sectors of the economy both domestically and internationally.

The analysis by DESA (Department of Economic and Social Affairs) division of the UN says that impact of coronavirus is disrupting the global economy to a great extent. Restrictions on the flow of goods and people across borders are dragging the economy into a deep recession. The plunge in the manufacturing sector has aroused a greater problem of millions of vulnerable workers.

According to DESA, the global economy may shrink by 0.9 percent in 2020. Adding to the crisis, the oil prices have dwindled to an all-time low, going negative for the first time. The tourism industry, aviation industry, automobile sector are the most affected ones with the impact on the supply of raw material and slump in demand across the world.

The spillover effect from developed to developing nations will be the cause of concern too. However, the severity of the impact of coronavirus could only be gauged post-crisis upon the relaxation of restrictions by these nations.

Social Impact

People around the globe are observing constructive behavioral change amidst the lockdown situation. Taking care of precautionary guidelines provided by the governments and health experts from time to time, health is being prioritized.

Rather than spending money to buy happiness outside, contentment is cherished at home. Self-realization, family bonding, and nurturing oneself is a newly defined fashion. But the picture is not so bright for all the groups. Families below the poverty line are the most vulnerable category including the daily wage earners and refugees most importantly.

Migration is the next biggest problem governments are facing apart from this deadly disease.

Environmental Impact of Coronavirus

However, the atmosphere has witnessed some positive changes in the prevailing situation. Due to much less vehicular and industrial pollution, AQI had never been better.

Emission of particulate matter (PM) i.e. 2.5 has dropped by nearly 35 percent by the end of March’2020. Grounded planes have figuratively contributed to the improvement in the quality of air around the world. Canals and rivers across the metropolitans have gotten crystal clear.

Domestic power consumption is growing over commercial ones which is positive for the environment. The Paris accord goals which were otherwise much difficult to achieve seem approachable now.
