The Ski Locker: What To Know When Storing Your Skis

Hussain Ali

Are you going to store your skis, but you aren’t sure how to prepare them? You’ve invested a lot of money in your skis, so it’s important to take care of them.

By the end of the season, many skiers don’t take the time to give their skis and equipment the care they need.

According to the National Ski Areas Association, there were over 59 million skier visits last year in the US. That’s a lot of skis to store in the off-season.

Are you wondering what you can do to ensure your skis are in top condition next season? Here are some helpful tips to prepare your skis for storage in a ski locker.

Clean Your Equipment

Your skis will need a wipe down with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Avoid hot water and be gentle when you wash the surface. That will remove any small bits of salt or dirt on them.

Repair Any Damage

The base of your skis can take a lot of hard knocks during a run, especially near the end of the season when rocks are starting to come to the surface.

Examine your bases. If there are large scrapes, get them fixed at a ski shop. Look for any rust spots or burrs and nicks. They can damage your skis if you put them in ski storage without taking care of them.

Sharpen Your Edges

Nothing cuts through ice like sharp edges on your skis, and a season of skiing can dull them. Take care of any burrs with a diamond stone and give them a final smoothing treatment with a gummy stone.

Leave a layer of wax on your skis to protect them during the summer months. If you don’t have the time, bring your skis to the local ski shop, and they’ll get them ready for next year.

Ski Storage Ideas Include a Ski Locker

Choose a location that will protect your equipment. If you have a corner in your garage, install ski lockers or put them in another enclosure to keep them from getting bumped. You can install a ski and snowboard storage rack large enough to hold your family’s equipment in one location.

Loosen your bindings by turning the DIN setting to its lowest level. That reduces stress on the bindings. Put a piece of masking tape on your skis with a note of the correct DIN so you’re able to reset them in the fall.

Strap your skis together with the bottoms facing each other, but not too tightly. You want to prevent them from warping.

Protect Your Investment

Taking care of your skis before putting them into a ski locker is a great way to prepare for the next ski season. When it snows, you’ll be happy you took the time because you’ll be ready to go skiing.
