Whether male or female, face shaving is a common step in most people’s grooming routines. But do you know how to do it properly?

If you’re making face shaving mistakes, it can lead to a disaster. You could easily cut your face on accident or agitate your skin. Both of these end up giving you an undesirable look!

So, what are the biggest mistakes anyway, and how can you avoid them? Keep reading to find out!

1. Forgetting to Cleanse Your Face

Preparing for shaving is essential before you start! That means cleansing your face first. This step removes sweat and dirt buildup from your skin so you can get a better shave.

It doesn’t hurt to disinfect your razor, too. Bacteria can grow on it after each use, which often leads to annoying breakouts.

2. Exfoliating Too Often

Exfoliating is efficient for clearing dead skin cells that would otherwise cause ingrown hairs. There is such a thing as doing it too often, though. When you over-exfoliate with an abrasive scrub, your skin gets irritated, and it even does damage by creating micro-tears.

Only exfoliating once or twice a week is all you need.

3. Using an Old Razor

You can’t reuse the same razor forever because old ones can cause razor burn. Plus, a dull blade makes you more prone to cuts and agitation.

Changing your razor blades after every 5 to 7 shaves is recommended. Depending on how thick your hair is, you may need to swap them more or less often than that.

4. Skipping the Shaving Cream or Gel

While it may save time, skipping the use of face shaving products can ruin your skin. Shaving cream or a clear shave gel help prevent cuts by creating a smooth surface for the razor to glide against. They also keep your face hydrated, which further prevents any irritation.

It’s always worth it to spend an extra couple of minutes applying either of these products when you’re preparing for shaving.

5. Shaving Against Your Hair Growth

Perhaps the biggest of all face shaving mistakes is shaving against the grain of your hair’s growth. By doing this, your razor harshly pulls at your skin and hair! It also leaves your face irritated and covered in razor burn.

Instead, always shave in the same direction as your hair’s growth. Don’t switch up the direction mid-shave, either.

6. Not Applying a Moisturizer Afterward

When you skip a post shave routine, you put your skin at risk of agitation. Include a moisturizer or facial oil among your face shaving products to avoid it!

Moisturizing is beneficial because it helps lock in extra hydration to make dryness a thing of the past. It also soothes the skin, which keeps irritation away.

Don’t Make These Face Shaving Mistakes

Many people shave their faces nowadays to remove hair or get a smoother makeup application. No matter what your reason for it is, be careful to avoid these face shaving mistakes! You’ll get a much closer shave, and your skin will thank you.
