Hussain Ali

Are you worried about heart disease in the future? Want to know what you might be doing today that could cause problems later?

If you’ve ever asked yourself if heart disease is preventable, the answer isn’t as easy as yes or no. However, there are things you can do to lower your risk and maybe prevent heart disease down the line.

Is Heart Disease Preventable

It would be much easier to say yes or no to this question, but like many things in health, there are some aspects outside our control. Many factors contribute to heart disease, some of which you can prevent or stop now before they become too big of a problem, but some are a part of who you are.

Uncontrollable Factors

Unfortunately, there are several things that do contribute to heart disease that you can’t change or fix. If you have a family history of heart disease, like a relative experiencing it when they were younger, it may run in your family. This is especially true if it is prevalent in one of your parents before the age of 55 for your dad or 65 for your mom, and could warn you when it might become a problem for you.

Men tend to have an increased risk, and race can also mean you are more at risk. African American individuals tend to experience more heart disease than caucasian or Hispanic individuals. These things are not causes of heart disease, but studies suggest certain populations may be more susceptible.

The risk of heart disease increases with age, and we all get older. This isn’t something that will change, but certain factors are within your control.

Controllable Factors

When it comes to the prevention and control of cardiovascular disease, there are numerous lifestyle choices that help lower your risk and severity. Many of these like exercising regularly, eating healthy, and staying at a healthy weight for your body type are obvious for the management of cardiovascular diseases.

Other lifestyle choices to follow would be not to smoke and don’t drink too much alcohol, as that can contribute to higher blood pressure. It is also recommended that you limit stress and try to get plenty of sleep. Certain things like high stress can be a trigger for heart attacks, but if you can maintain healthy habits, it’s a good way to prevent heart disease naturally.
