Points To Remember While Collecting Soil Samples For Testing

If you are into soil management, you would know that how important it is to test the samples of soil. The rate at which soil degradation is increasing is unparalleled. We need to engage ourselves in the protection of soil. Otherwise, the land would become barren and the crop yields would go down. Sample tests of soil are taken for every two hectares of land, according to the test every two hectares of land represents that specific piece of land. The farmer comes to know about the abnormalities of his land through this soil testing. If you are using excess fertiliser, the environmental quality around the soil will decrease automatically. Samples can be taken by dividing the field into even units depending upon their homogeneous nature. One should not forget to clear the upper layer of soil that may be full of litter. It is advised to take at least 10 to 12 samples from a sapling. The samples should be placed individually in a tray so that they can be identified afterwards

  1. A fallow period is the most advisable time to collect samples of soil for testing. In the fallow period, the soil is left to recover its organic quality. 
  2. The samples should be collected between the rows in case there is a standing crop pattern. If you want the samples to be taken accurately based on homogeneity, take samples in a zig-zag format. 
  3. To save time, the fields that look similar in physical nature and their homogeneity type is the same, they can be named as a single unit. Before categorising them as a single unit, one should make sure that the practices that the land has followed in past should be similar to others.
  4. When there is a difference in the appearance, type, colour, texture, past practice management, drainage of the soil, one should collect different sampling tests. 
  5. One should not take samples of dead or barren land. Also, areas around irrigation channels and other wet points should be avoided too. It would only waste your time. 
  6. If the crop is rooted in a shallow state, the sample should be taken 15cm deep. In case, the crop is rooted deeply, the sample has to be taken from 30 cm deep. For huge trees, profile samples should be collected.
  7. It is always advisable to take the sampling tests in presence of the owner/farmer. The farmer looks after the land and knows about every inch. He can guide you for a better sampling test.

So these are the points that one has to keep in mind while taking the samples. It is important to follow all the guidelines stated above. A compressive strength testing machine is one such machine that makes the whole testing process easier. The yield of your crops would be better if one knows about the abnormalities faced by the land. Sampling tests of soil should not be avoided at all.
