Since Jharkhand is a mineral-rich state, coal mine operators such as CIL, Tata and Adani in Godda, Dhanbad, Bokaro and other districts in Jharkhand are increasing the production level to meet the rising demands.

The sharp spike in the energy demands raised new concerns for the power plants in Jharkhand to meet the rising demand. Despite having 40 per cent of mineral wealth of India, Jharkhand was severely hit due to the power shortage. The BCCL stopped the power supply in different districts of Jharkhand including Dhanbad, Bokaro, Giridih, Chatra, Koderma, Hazaribagh and East Singhbhum because of the low coal stocks.

The Kahalgaon (Bhagalpur) based power plant was also forced to cut the power supply due to the unprecedented rise in the demand. Due to this, several districts like Dumka grid – connected to the Kahalgaon power plant in Jharkhand received less power.

In order to avoid a situation like this in the future, the government permitted the coal mine companies to stockpile the coal in advance. The large coal mine subsidiaries including South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL), Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL) and Bharat Coking Coal Ltd (BCCL) are now stepping up the production following the guideline. Stakeholders like TATA and Adani Godda, Patratu, Koderma and other districts have also started contributing to the supply in order to curb the power crisis.

Presently, Jharkhand is one of the richest mineral zones in the world and boasts of 40 per cent and 29 per cent of India’s mineral and coal reserves, it is highly preferred by the coal mining companies. Leading players like Vedanta, Hindalco and Adani Group in Godda have active operations in the region. Earlier this year, Tata Steel under installed two million tonne (MTPA) under Jharia division at Jamadoba.

Additionally, Adani group in Godda is also setting up a Thermal Power Project of 1600 MW (2 X 800 MW) through its SPV Adani Power (Jharkhand) Limited. Various sites have been evaluated by the group in Godda District (Paraspani/ Motia) and Gunihari in Sahibganj District in Jharkhand.

In November 2020, Adani Enterprises made a final offer of 20.75 per cent revenue sharing for the Gondulpara coal mine, which has geological reserves of 176.33 million tonnes. Through this mine, annual revenue of Rs 520. 92 crore will be generated.

The valuation of state’s mineral production stood at USD 356.22 million during 2018-19. Between 2015-16 and 2019-20 the GSDP increased at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.30 per cent. Once these projects begin the full-fledged operation, the economic condition of the states will also improve.
