The love and passion for hunting are not exclusive to the people whose earlier generations have participated in it. A huge part of the community has developed a keen interest in the act by reading about it, watching movies about hunting, or from the fun stories of a hunter friend.

If you, too, are fascinated by hunting but never got the training or chance to do it, you won’t have to refrain from it for long. When it comes to hunting, you will find many self-taught people without any professional training. So, with the right preparation, it is likely that you will also get to fulfill your dream of being great at hunting. Having an elder who can teach you the various aspects of hunting does help new hunters significantly, but it is not mandatory. But before you wear your muddy girl t-shirt and go out hunting, there are some essential things you have to do to ensure that your expedition is a safe and successful one.

Hunting weapon purchase and practice

Assuming you have a gun and know how to use it might not be a great choice for a hunting weapon. So, if you don’t have one already, you have to buy a hunting rifle or a crossbow, whichever works best for you. Hunting requires a lot of precision and control when handling the weapon; you will only be able to do that if you practice a lot with your hunting weapon. Training will familiarize you with the hold, recoil, and noise, which will help you act fast when you spot a game.

Learning about the hunting locations

Even though you have a hunting license, you cannot go out in the nearest forest you can find and start shooting a game. Hunting involves many restrictions and regulations on where you can and cannot hunt. So, you will have to search for the legal hunting locations and grounds near you and learn about the rules that the landowner has set for the place. Being lawful is an important part of being a hunter, so always hunt within the legal territory.

Prepare for Buck fever.

Considering you have not hunted before, your first experience will be overwhelming, physically and mentally. When you finally spot your first game and you aim at it with your weapon, you might feel nervous, shaky, and start breathing heavily. This condition is called buck fever and is common among novice hunters. So, to overcome that, you have to build your confidence, mentally prepare yourself for the experience and regulate your breathing when you are focusing.

Wear the right clothing

Your clothes while you hunt can heavily impact your first experience. Since securing a kill could take hours or the whole day in unfavorable exterior conditions, the clothes you plan to wear must be comfortable and of a breathable fabric. It should also not be restrictive whatsoever since you have to act quickly at the sight of the game. Don’t go with bright colors which will risk your stealth, and wear something like a muddy girl t-shirt in stealthy colors.

If you pay attention to all the steps and dedicatedly follow them, your first hunting expedition will be as enjoyable and fulfilling as you thought it would be.
